Bank of Mauritius

The Bank of Mauritius was established in September 1967 as the Central Bank of the country. It was modelled on the Bank of England and was, in effect, set up with the assistance of senior officers of the Bank of England.

The Bank of Mauritius Act 1966 (as amended) lays down the purposes of the Bank which are to 'safeguard the internal and external value of the currency of Mauritius and its internal convertibility' and to 'direct its policy towards achieving monetary conditions conducive to strengthening the economic activity and prosperity of Mauritius.

Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Since its launching, the MCCI (MCCI) has evolved from a purely representative and consultative body to a dynamic actor in the socio-economic development of the country. Throughout its years of existence, it has constantly striven to carry out its fundamental mission of defending and promoting the vital interests of its Members. It has also set up and developed the organisational structures capable of providing a wide range of highly professional services.

Furthermore, as the main voice of the Mauritian business community, it has always maintained close links with Government and increasingly contributed to the development process of the country. And just as importantly, it has set up links and affiliations at international level with inter-governmental and private organisations aimed at widening its scope of activities and better promoting Mauritius on the world scene.

As for discussions relating to the development of commercial and industrial activities, the MCCI is regularly solicited and makes submissions directly to representatives of the Government ministries and departments concerned.

MEXA (Mauritius Export Association)

Founded in 1976, the Mauritius Export Association (MEXA) is the sole private association in Mauritius regrouping the export companies.

It was called to restructure itself in 2007 to fully represent the Export Sector of Mauritius. Indeed, the export sector has evolved significantly over the past ten years. New sectors of export have emerged namely Seafood, Agro Industries, Jewellery, Gems & Watches, Chemical products, etc. There has also been a diversification in terms of markets. Indeed, there is more and more trade with Canada, Australia, Japan, the African countries and more.

MEXA aims to promote and defend the interests of the Export Community of Mauritius at national, regional and international level.

MSB (Mauritius Standards Bureau)

The Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB) is a corporate body which has been set up under the Mauritius Standards Bureau Act 1993. The Bureau is responsible for standardization, quality assurance, testing and metrology. MSB operates a certification marking scheme for products and a national management system certification scheme (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, ISO 22000, HACCP).


MSB is also the custodian of the national measurement standards and offers calibration services. It is the National Enquiry point for WTO/TBT matters.

SME Mauritius

SME Mauritius Ltd is a private company, incorporated in 2017 and fully owned by the Government of Mauritius.

TRADE OBSTACLE ALERT MAURITIUS

This web-based Platform allows trade operators to report obstacles they face when exporting or importing their products. Via an alert system based on email notification, the relevant national authorities are informed of these obstacles and can provide timely solutions. In addition, users can choose to receive alerts of the obstacles encountered by other operators for the products and markets of their interest.

African Trade Observatory

The African Trade Observatory (ATO), one of the five operational instruments of the AfCFTA, serves as a repository of trade information and allows to monitor, in real time, the pace of trade and economic integration in Africa. Information such as intra-continental trade flows (traded values, traded quantities, the use of tariff preferences, taxes and fees paid at the border), and information on market conditions (such as taxes applicable at the border and regulatory requirements) are available on the Portal.

The African Union Commission is integrating the ATO with the African Business Directory.

COMESA (as defined by its Treaty) was established 'as an organisation of free independent sovereign states which have agreed to co-operate in developing their natural and human resources for the good of all their people' and as such it has a wide-ranging series of objectives which necessarily include in its priorities the promotion of peace and security in the region.

Commonwealth

Created in 1949, the Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 countries that support each other and work together towards shared goals in democracy and development. Like Mauritius, most of its members a common colonial heritage to Britain.

The Commonwealth is committed to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, and pursues these through programmes implemented by the Divisions of the Commonwealth Secretariat. Moreover, it is committed to the enhancement of member countries and governments in a number of areas such as racial equality and national sovereignty, enforcement of democracy and consensus building, economic development, education, sustainable development, gender issues, offices for peace, health, human development, human rights, rule of law and public sector development, amongst others.

The Commonwealth is committed to enhance Technical Assistance to countries and governments by providing experts on short and long term basis to help set up projects and programmes that boost the ability of a country or region in a particular field.

International Standardization Organisation

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards.

ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 161 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system. ISO is a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors.

On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations.

Therefore, ISO enables a consensus to be reached on solutions that meet both the requirements of business and the broader needs of society.

International Trade Centre (ITC)

ITC is the technical cooperation agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

As the development partner for small business export success, ITC's goal is to help developing and transition countries achieve sustainable human development through exports.

ITC's technical assistance concentrates on the three issues for which it believes the need for national capacity-building is most critical: helping businesses understand WTO rules; strengthening enterprise competitiveness; and developing new trade promotion strategies.

TRALAC

Established in February 2002, TRALAC is a non-profit making organisation that builds trade law capacity in the southern Africa region, in governments, the private sector and civil society.

TRALAC consists of a core of trade lawyers and economists with high-level expertise in a wide range of trade and trade-related areas. TRALAC's mission is to build trade law capacity in southern Africa so that these countries can participate effectively in the global economy; to negotiate trade agreements that will support their development objectives, and so that they can implement the agreements to ensure that they realise the potential benefits of international trade.

TRALAC also prepares and disseminates a weekly electronic newsletter, Trade Briefs, Working Papers, news articles on various trade related issues.

TRALAC's activities include, inter alia, developing and delivering capacity building programmers such as training programmers on trade law matters.

UNCTAD

Established in 1964, UNCTAD promotes the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy.

UNCTAD functions as a forum for intergovernmental deliberations aimed at consensus building; it undertakes research, policy analysis and data collection and provides technical assistance tailored to the specific requirements of developing countries, with special attention to the needs of the least developed countries and of economies in transition.

Mauritius is a member of the Trade and Development Board of UNCTAD.

World Custom Organization

The World Customs Organization (WCO) is the only intergovernmental organisation exclusively focused on Customs matters.

With its worldwide membership, the WCO is now recognised as the voice of the global Customs community. It is particularly noted for its work in areas covering the development of global standards, the simplification and harmonisation of Customs procedures, trade supply chain security, the facilitation of international trade, the enhancement of Customs enforcement and compliance activities, anti-counterfeiting and piracy initiatives, public-private partnerships, integrity promotion, and sustainable global Customs capacity building programmes.

The WCO also maintains the international Harmonized System goods nomenclature, and administers the technical aspects of the WTO Agreements on Customs Valuation and Rules of Origin.
