Historical

Tourism in Armenia is rooted in the country's historical landmarks and natural attractions. Armenia was a regional empire with a rich culture in the years leading up to the 1st Century BC, at one period controlling all the land between the Black and Caspian Seas. In 301 AD, Armenia was the first state to formally adopt Christianity as its official state religion, twelve years before Rome. Numerous monuments and masterpieces of the Ancient era and Middle Ages can be found throughout the country. Many of the most interesting sights in the country are associated with the heritage of the Armenian apostolic church.

Cultural

Armenia is often referred to as an open air museum ; 4,000 historical monuments are found in the country.  From ancient times, Armenians have always been eager to protect their traditions and culture.

 

 Architecture, sculpture, music and dance, literature play an important role in the Armenian culture.

Nature

The countless mountains of Armenia offer a wide range of activities in connection with nature. Hiking and biking are one of the possible activities.

 

Lake Sevan also offers the possibility for fishing the characteristic Iskhan fish ("Prince of Fish") that can be found in this lake.

Bird watching and horseback riding are also activities that can be enjoyed in Armenia.  

Religious

Armenia is the first nation to have declared Christianity as state religion in 301 AD and Christianity has always been at the centre of Armenian culture and traditions.

 

 

 

 There are numerous churches and monasteries of tremendous beauty. Echmiadzin cathedral in the Armavir region is the residence of the Supreme Catholicos and pilgrims regularly come to visit the place.  The Geghard monastery in Kotayk region is also of great beauty and is also situated near the Garni village. The monastery dates back to the 10th-13th centuries. Other monasteries to be spotted are Khor Virap, Saint Gregory the Illuminator. Armenia is one of the great places for religious tourism.  

Thermal

Armenia is rich in mineral and thermal water among which the best known is the Jermuk mi neral water. Bjni, Lichk, Ararat, Dilijan are also known mineral sources of the countries and spas health resorts have been established to welcome tourists near these sources.

Beach

There are no beaches in Armenia due to the country's geographic location.

Winter Sports

Winter sport is practiced at Tsakhkadzor, 55 km northeast from Yerevan. Located on an altitude of 1840 m from the sea level, it allows skiing in winter.

Outdoor Activities

Lake Sevan, Dilijan National park (north of Armenia), Tsopk Waterfall (near Jermuk) allow for outdoor activities.

Shopping

Armenia allows for different types of shopping: handicrafts and different art products (at the preview open air market during weekends in the centre of Yerevan), jewelry with two big jewelry markets opening in the centre of Yerevan, more traditional shopping (clothing, food markets) throughout the capital.
